This was my very first story. Ever. And I love it.
There were a few things that caused this story to bubble up in my brain. The first was this:
He looks so peaceful here. Just...totally accepting of his imminent death. I really wanted to write something about what he was going through here. But at the same time, everyone else knew what was about to happen too; and Bulma was the one to do something about it. Sure, what she was complaining about was Beerus ruining her party, but it stopped Vegeta from being destroyed.
The "My Bulma" moment that follows this is very popular (and I love it too), but it was this precursor that really grabbed my attention. I wanted to do something with it, but nothing quite came to mind until I had a dream where an image grabbed me--Vegeta throwing up into the roses outside of Capsule Corp in response to being served divorce papers. (Don't ask about why I dreamed that or what happened; that image is the only part I remember).
So that got me thinking about why that might happen? What could Vegeta have done that might trigger Bulma to leave him? And of course, that was an obvious answer. He atoned for it, but the Majin Buu incident was a major fuck-up. And so the idea of connecting these moments led to this story.
Also, I love writing Sad Vegeta™.
The timeline is a little weird, because there's a few different versions. The manga, original anime, and various dubs all seem to have a different answer for exactly when Super starts. For the purpose of the story, I used the voiceover introduction from Super which says it starts six months after Buu. I don't think this is the actual timeline (Gohan didn't grow up and get married in six months, for heaven's sake) but it works for the story so I ran with it.
